Bay City First Responder Dies Unexpectedly
On Tuesday July 2, 2019, Bay City Department of Public Safety Fire Operations Captain Larry Gillman passed away unexpectedly at his home. Captain Gillman was a firefighter for the City of Bay City for over 23 years and was in the fire service for over 32 years. Captain Gillman started his career as a firefighter in the United States Navy. After being honorably discharged from the Navy he worked for the Bangor Township Fire Department as a reserve firefighter.
Captain Gillman was hired as a firefighter for the Bay City Fire Department on October 30, 1995. He served in the capacity of Acting Battalion Chief from November 13, 2018, until his death on July 2nd. He served on the Bay County Central Dispatch Review Committee and was the MIOSHA Compliance Program Manager for the Fire Operations Division. During his career he was awarded a distinguished service citation and lifesaving citation.
Gilman comes from a family of first responders. He is survived by a brother who was with the Bay County Sheriff’s Department and his father Thomas Gillman, Sr was with the Sheriff’s Department for decades before retiring.
