A fire that killed a woman in Gratiot County’s Breckenridge on March 6 has led to felony charges against her boyfriend.

Fire crews were sent to a home in the 700 block of Chestnut Street around 3:30 A.M. after an explosion caused a fire. 34-year-old Ali Smith and her seven-year-old daughter were inside, while 35-year-old Aaron Painter was outside the house with severe burns, according to police. Firefighters were able to get the woman and girl out of the house, though Smith died at the scene. Painter and the girl were treated at a local hospital.

Painter is charged with involuntary manslaughter, third-degree child abuse, and delivery manufacture of marijuana. A cause of the fire has not been made public at this time.
