The Bay City Department of Public Safety responded to a house fire Monday, July 15.

Crews were dispatched to the 2700 block of Garfield Ave. around 4:05 a.m. to find a single family home on fire. Officials say it began on the porch and spread to the front of the home. The fire also spread to the upstairs, creating heavy smoke.

A young resident was awakened by the smoke detector and managed to get the family out safely. Firefighters rescued the family cat. No injuries were reported.

Mutual aid was provided by Portsmouth Township.
