A state police trooper has been found justified in their use of force for a May 26 officer involved shooting in Buena Vista Township.

Police responded to a home in the 1000 block of Cathay Street for a report of a shooting. According to police, 63-year-old Willie Allen shot his former girlfriend 47-year-old Kenya Collins, then fled the scene with her in a vehicle. Police found the vehicle at the intersection of Holland Avenue and Outer Drive. Police say gunshots were fired from inside the vehicle.

The trooper, who was behind the vehicle, fired one shot, which struck the back of the driver’s seat. No one was injured with that shot. No other shots were fired and Allen surrendered to police. Collins was taken to a hospital where she died from her injuries.

The Michigan Attorney General’s Office, which was asked to review the incident, found the trooper acted in self defense and in defense of others, saying the use of force was justified and legal.
