Panel Releases Report on 2020 Dam Failures

A five-member panel appointed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has determined that the failure of the Edenville and Sanford Dams on the Tittabawassee River on May 19, 2020 was “foreseeable and preventable.”

The panel’s report released Wednesday said design and construction flaws in the Edenville Dam when it was built in the 1920s, plus operation and maintenance issues over the years caused the disaster.

When the Edenville Dam collapsed, it released a torrent that overtopped the downstream Sanford Dam causing widespread flooding. Thousands of people were evacuated and 150 homes were destroyed, with damages of more than $200 million.
