State Senator Jim Stamas has sponsored legislation to rename a portion of US-10 to honor a fallen soldier.

24-year-old Lance Corporal Steve Szymanski, a 2008 graduate of Midland High School, was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. He enlisted in 2013. Szymanski died October 21, 2014 during a training exercise at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Stamas’s legislation calls for the portion of US-10 between Jefferson and Bay City roads in Midland to be renamed the Marine Lance Corporal Steven J. Szymanski Memorial Highway. On Wednesday, June 5, Szymanski’s parents, John and Dawn, testified at the Michigan Senate in support of the legislation.

The bill would have no fiscal impact to the state or local government. Under state law, the Michigan Department of Transportation can place markers indicating the name of a memorial highways only when sufficient private contributions are made to completely cover their cost and maintenance.
