Bargainers for the United Auto Workers and General Motors announced they have reached a tentative contract agreement. The deal could  end a strike by 49,000 workers that began on Sept. 16, halting production at GM factories in the U.S . They striking workers are expected to stay on the picket lines until union committees take a vote. UAW membership must vote as well.  Details of the four-year contract were not immediately released.

The striking UAW workers  wanted a larger share of GM’s profits, job security and more permanent jobs for temporary workers.
GM was looking to reduce labor costs. The UAW’s top bargainer said the deal includes “major gains” for workers. It’s expected to include a lump sum and annual pay raises, no change in health care and product guarantees for many U.S. factories.
